What a Deck Really Costs in New Jersey (2026 Ranges)

Deck pricing online is either uselessly vague or suspiciously exact. Here's how the number actually gets built in Central Jersey — the ranges we see, what moves them, and the parts of the budget you should never trim.

The realistic ranges

Every deck is quoted individually, but for planning purposes, Central NJ projects generally land in these bands:

  • Deck repairs (boards, rails, stairs): a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on scope
  • Re-decking an existing sound frame: often half or less of a full rebuild
  • New pressure-treated deck: roughly $10,000–$20,000 for typical sizes
  • New composite deck with quality railing: roughly $18,000–$35,000+
  • Large, elevated, or multi-level builds with bars/benches: $35,000 and up

What actually moves the number

Four things drive deck cost more than anything else: size (obviously), height off the ground (elevated decks need bigger structure, more stairs, more railing), material (composite decking and aluminum or cable rail cost real money but nearly eliminate maintenance), and site conditions (slopes, poor access, and demo of an old deck all add labor).

Permits, engineering where required, and proper footings are part of every legitimate quote. A bid that's dramatically lower than the others usually found its savings underground — where you can't see it until it fails.

Where to save and where never to

Fine places to save: deck size, skipping built-ins for now, phasing the pergola or lighting for next year. Never save on: footings, framing lumber grade, ledger flashing, or railing attachment. The frame is the deck — decking and rails can be upgraded later, the structure can't.
